ongoing project
monos + SCHESI, Greek words meaning alone and connected, explores the influence of social media on our identity, and relationships.
A conceptual approach - intuitive and a poetic - explores pictures of an unknown family from an album purchased on EBay. Their body parts are replaced with squares, coded using colors from social networks - sometimes with lines running out of them or they are cropped or sometimes even their faces presented as larger than life mono-tone portraits. II have tried to take something tender and intimate and point to how social media is a lens through which we are analyzed, categorized and commoditized.
Once printed the images are hand-painted with pigments, particularly blue ones. This old-world process, leaves traces of my brush strokes. Our perception of blue did not exist until there was a word to describe it - approximately 4,500 years ago. We could not see it until we named it. This artistic gesture comments on issues of in/visibility, innovation, awareness, identity and societal transformation. . As a final gesture, I seal the works with wax. This introduces an element of unpredictability. Exposed to oxygen in the environment, the pieces become dynamic; the level of blur varies. This response shifts over time.
